Many years ago my mother, an angel in whose mouth butter wouldn’t have melted, in conversation over the dinner table called someone a “pillock”
My father’s eyebrows raised and for a moment he was lost for words.
“What did you say Enid?” he eventually demanded of her.
“Do you know what that means?”
“No” she innocently replied.
Good grief if Mammy had known what the word meant she would have died on the spot rather than utter it.
It sent me rushing to a dictionary, to discover that the offensive word was shorthand for “broken penis”.
Some words should be reserved for doctor’s surgery, or for the playground.
So when I read that Liverpool’s well paid footballer Raheem Sterling’s agent Aidy Ward called retired Liverpool Jamie Carragher legend (17 years at Anfield) a “knob” for suggesting that Sterling button his lip I naturally thought of Mammy’s faux pas
The big difference is that agent Aidy Ward knew what he was saying.
And probably many thousands of Liverpool fans would have wanted to cut his knob off in retaliation for this one liner.
The responsibility of an agent is to maximise the wages of the people on his payroll.
The man (so far) with intact genitalia suggested that the young man Sterling wants not far short of £50,000,000 per year to resign for the club.
Q: What does that make Mr Aidy Ward?
A: A bottom eater.
Definition of bottom eater: someone who does nothing to add to the generation of wealth, but feeds off it.
