What is Easter about anyway?

In 3 month’s time I’ll be celebrating my son’s wedding at a several hundred year old church in Suffolk.
The opening hymn is a bit of a jig, which sets my feet tapping every time I hear it.
But listen closely to the words of the attached You Tube video and recognise a seriousness to the piece – hanging on the cross to die is not a foot tapping event.

Today many children in the affluent western world will be opening Easter egg presents, for capitalism has turned the Easter message, as it does at every other meaningful festival, into a reason to increase consumer spending and give a short term fix to an ailing economy.

It was on the road to Damascus that Paul (later given a sainthood) began his Christian journey.
This is the same Saint Paul who wrote those unforgettable words “Love is patient and kind, and it’s never glad about injustice – in fact it rejoices whenever truth wins out”

Let’s hope we begin to stuff less of the worlds surplus in our own mouths, give more to the starving and be less comfortable living with injustice in the world.

As Paul summates, at the end of the day many God given qualities will fade away, leaving faith, hope, and love. But the greatest of these, is love.

Yes, infinitely more than faith, it’s love that cuts the mustard.
